Blast to the Past… Catching up to the Present

I hope we all agree that this has been quite a stressful year, which has forced us to adapt in extremely demanding ways. So much so that our generation resorted to memes and TikToks as a coping mechanism. Yes, I know, what a very Gen-X and Millenial thing to do. Well, it’s been almost a full year of this chaos, and lots of people’s social media is flooded with these ‘so-called’ coping mechanisms as a consequence. I’m sure everyone is ecstatic about 2021 being just around the corner, thinking, “What happens in 2020 stays in 2020. However, 2020 ain’t no Las Vegas, and this year’s difficulties are not going to suddenly disappear as the clock turns to 00:01 this New Year.

So, while it was understandable to feel and act as if life was paused, we must accept that some of the difficulties will accompany us as we enter the new year of 2021. In light of this, it is time for a new year resolution to resume with our lives, which begins with nourishing and investing in ourselves as individuals. One way is through the media we consume.

This year has made it emotionally draining for many to keep up with the news and may have discouraged many from consuming such content. However, it is not so bad keeping up with the world in small doses. I know that news outlets, magazine subscriptions, newsletters, or local news on TV are not everyone’s cup of tea, especially the latter cause… Who watches local TV anymore? However, there are much more straightforward, practical, and efficient ways to stay up to date with everyday events of every category, and that is through one of the most used social media outlets worldwide, Instagram.

There are so many Instagram accounts offering valuable, concise, and user-friendly news and information to help you stay up to date in today’s world. You can easily infiltrate this valuable content into your daily feed through a simple follow. This way, you can effortlessly get your daily dose of worthy news, knowledge, and brain food while still doing your typical scrolling or procrastination.

Here are 3 great Instagram accounts to get you started:

  1. General: World Economic Forum – @worldeconomicforum

My personal favorite. This is perfect for those who get overwhelmed with the negative news from news outlets and benefit from engaging content.

Most of the account’s content is refreshingly optimistic, and after a year like 2020, we could all benefit from positive news.

Its content varies from stories of remarkable individuals, eco-friendly innovations, the company’s initiative on tackling specific issues, general news, and so much more. Their content is predominantly presented through short and engaging one-minute long videos, entailing visuals, music, and concise information about the respective topic.

  1. Business: Bloomberg Business – @bloombergbusiness

This is ideal for those who want a bit more information than just a headline but lack the will or energy to read full articles.

Its content varies from world economies, stories of outstanding entrepreneurs, occasional pop-culture, general news, and tips and ideas for various situations such as smart financial gifts for this holiday.

Firstly, their content is presented through a post, introducing the topic to you with an engaging respective image and title. If you’re interested enough in the topic offered to you, the caption provides you with a short five-sentence summary.

Other similar accounts are @businessinsider, @harvard_business_review, or @finacialtimes.

3. Politics and Human Rights: AJ+ – @ajplus

This is great for those who want a general idea of politics and human rights issues worldwide, all found in one place.

Their content varies from disabilities, racism, COVID-19, discrimination, inequality, critical assessment of the world’s biggest companies such as Amazon and Nike, and much more. Their content is presented in both videos and posts.

The videos are similar to those of the World Economic Forum, except they are between 2-3 minutes long and include interviews. The posts vary from 2-6 screens, but don’t get alarmed! The information is very user-friendly, meaning the information is concise, appropriately spread out for easy understanding, and visually engaging.

Overall, these three accounts are a great starter-pack to get general information about relevant sectors, such as business, politics, human rights, and much needed positive news in our daily life. Despite the challenging year we’ve endured, and our problems won’t automatically resolve in 2021, let’s remember that things are moving in the right direction. For starters, a COVID-19 vaccine has been found. That alone should be the hope and motivation to everyone to keep investing in yourself and grow personally and professionally. It all starts by taking small steps.
